Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the fifth main game in the Animal Crossing series.

Canon

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the fifth installment of the Animal Crossing series, after Animal Crossing: New Leaf (2012). The game is a Nintendo Switch exclusive and became an instant best-seller due to the COVID-19 pandemic quarantine conditions.

In this installment, the player buys an island from Tom Nook. Depending on the real-world location of the player, their island can be in the Northern or Southern Hemisphere. The player then controls a character who moves to the deserted island.

The player can then explore their selected island, collect items and artifacts, upgrade their tools, housing, etc. The game supports both co-op and local gameplays, making it easy to play with your friends over social distancing.

COVID19

The release of the game coincided with the start of the COVID19 pandemic, and many fans were helped through lockdowns etc via the escapism the game provided. It's very likely, though not an absolute certainty, that the increased time spent indoors by many people was a large factor as to why the game became as successful as it was commercially, being the best selling Animal Crossing game so far, the best selling Switch Exclusive, the second best selling Switch game overall (behind Mario Kart 8 Deluxe), and the 28th best selling video game of all time.

Many people have utilised the game during the pandemic to socialise with others.

Customization

The high amount of customization built into the game (from character skins to building designs to terraforming your island) mean that a lot of fan activity is in showing off your designs, whether making jokes [3], referencing other fandoms [4][5], or showing off your own creativity and style.
