Otterlock & Hedgejohn are crack AU animal versions of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson from the BBC television series Sherlock.

Origin and spread

Otterlock and Hedgejohn may be the first documented Sherlock animal AU. The meme emerged in early 2012, likely inspired by the famous "Otters Who Look Like Benedict Cumberbatch" photoset first posted by redscharlach on Tumblr on March 19, 2012.[1] This photoset contrasts humorous photos of otters with similar screencaps of actor Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock.[1] A piece of art portraying John as a hedgehog on DeviantArt predates redscharlach's meme by a few weeks.[2]

The two characters are generally depicted together as standard-sized animals. Otterlock typically wears his trademark blue scarf while Hedgehog wears a cozy jumper. Art featuring anthropomorphized versions of the characters also exists.
