Only Good for Legends is a Kirk/Spock story by leupagus. One part of the backstory is co-written by screamlet and waldorph.

Author's Summary: Detective Spock, born on Vulcan and resident of San Francisco, is assigned to the Midwest police bureau. I think everyone can guess what happens next.[1]

Recs and Reviews

An AU where Spock grows up on Earth after his father's death and becomes a police detective rather than a Starfleet officer. After he gets embroiled in a political situation, he's sent away from San Francisco to keep him out of trouble. Of course, he ends up in Riverside and meets Iowa's Most Wanted. There's some initial Spock/Uhura, which is so not my thing, but it didn't bother me too much.[2]

A detective story that takes place in a universe very close to that of the movie. Spock is a detective recent to Iowa; Kirk a low-level offender who becomes fascinated with him. Spock’s mom teaches at Starfleet. Starts a little slow but quickly becomes absolutely engrossing.[3]

Detective Spock of the IDD is sent to Iowa to lay low, and there he meets the troublemaker Jim Kirk. I resisted reading this at first, but I'm glad I gave in. It's a very satisfying story--the things I like about the canon are still there.[4]

Spock in a police uniform. 🙂 Spock’s and Kirk’s relationship develops slowly and includes a longing James. The characters are recognizable despite them being influenced by different circumstances.[5]

It grows so beautifully. It slowly turns into a love story and then plummets into murder mystery and it’s just incredible.[6]

Only Good for Legends is almost like a reboot of The Reboot storyline where everything is vastly different yet somehow the same. A story in which Kirk and Spock start from very different beginnings but arrive at a similar final destination as their parallel universe counterparts.
The story is told from Spock's point of view with lush details of the world, the culture, and the characters. Characters and past events come alive through Spock's memories, but sometimes you get the feeling the narration might be somewhat fussy and disjointed at places, which adds to the mystery surrounding his father's death and brother's incarceration. The slow-building romance intertwines perfectly with the mystery storyline to give the pickiest reader a most unforgettable satisfying experience.
My personal favourite is actually the Amanda/Sybok (Spock's brother) friendship backstory – read the chapters in the author's suggest order and this little interlude will give you a stark contrast to later events that set the tone for Only Good for Legends and, in a way, put everything into focus. Good supporting female characters are a rarity in K/S fics, and the fantastic characterization of all the female secondary characters sets this story apart from the rest of the fandom. This is a story that will be remembered and read after all the people who contributed to its inception are long gone.[7]
