Night at the Museum is a live-action fantasy adventure-comedy film based on the 1993 novel of the same name by Milan Trenc. It was followed by a sequel in 2009 and the third film was released in 2014. An animated sequel was released in 2022 with an entirely new voice cast.

Junior novels were released alongside the live-action films, three of which are screen-to-page adaptations. The other two are original stories, catalogued in the Nick's Tales series.

Fandom

The book fandom seems non-existent, with most of the fandom dealing with the movieverse. This is likely in part due to people simply not knowing about the existence of the original book.

The most popular pairing from the movies is Jedediah/Octavius, a slash pairing. Also commonly known as 'Jedtavius' and 'Tiny Cowboy/Tiny Roman,' this pairing first became popular on tumblr, most likely as a joke, with users posting things like "I ship tiny cowboy and tiny roman from Night at The Museum". An early example by sassenach-kiss states "let’s stop kidding ourselves, we all know the true otp is Jedediah and Octavius from Night At the Museum".untitled Tumblr post by sassenach-kiss (28 March 2015) One of the most popular of these posts, written by tumblr user dicaeopolis, states "Fuck all romance except whatever the fuck that lil cowboy and roman guy from night at the museum had going on" and has since gained over 139,000 notes.[2] Eventually the pairing grew in popularity, and has since inspired a lot of fanfiction and fanart. As of 2024, there are over 900 Jedediah/Octavius fics on AO3 alone.[3] A fan wiki even portrays the pairing as canon[4].

Other than the Jedtavius shippers, the Night At The Museum fandom does, surprisingly, exist. While mostly found on Archive of Our Own and Tumblr, the fandom also resides in small pockets on other sites, including FanFiction.net. Tumblr users in the NATM fandom commonly tag their posts as 'NATM' (shorthand for 'Night At The Museum') and 'NATM Trash' (derived from the shorthand for Night At The Museum combined with the common fandom slang 'trash' implying a deep love for the NATM fandom).

Major ships in this fandom are Ahkmenrah/Larry (sometimes referred to as Tablet Guardians), Lancelot/Larry (sometimes referred to as Knightguard), and Amelia Earhart/Larry, which was born from the release of the second Night At The Museum movie. Various other ships exist, including Al Capone/Napoleon (Capoleon), Lancelot/Octavius (Tin Cans), and Joan of Arc/Sacagawea (Femslash Figures).

Jedediah, Octavius, Ahkmenrah, Larry, Sacagawea, Amelia Earhart and Robin Williams' Theodore Roosevelt are all often portrayed as favorite characters.
