The Newsies Mailing List was a mailing list in the Newsies fandom known for connecting fans across sites and preferences. It was created online in 1998 but existed in a less organized fashion as early as 1996.[3] There were over 770 members by 2003.[4] The member count was down to 502 in 2008.[5]
Events held by the NML included contests and movie nights. Through MySpace, members befriended actors including Arvie Lowe, Jr. and Trey Parker.
Criticism
I think it's the NY accents that scare me off. That and the Mary Sues...
Timeline
1998
The NML Yahoo! group was created on 15 July 1998.
1999
NMLer Curls Morgan passes away.[7] Many future websites feature dedications to her memory. Some place her death in 1996, and the name Nelson is used as an alternate surname, presumably part of her pseudonym.[3]
2000
Laces posted the first fic in the Sunny Days Saga on July 16.[8]
Luna created the Official Newsies List Fan Fiction Page.[9]
2001
Raindrop Allen, a Newsies fan active online since 1998, left the NML on 27 May 2001. She described quitting as "almost like like breaking up with a boyfriend I'd been dating for nearly 3 years."[10]
The LiveJournal community for NML was created on 1 October 2001 by chesapeake.[11]
The Newsies Mailing List Web Site was online in 2001, including a list of member profiles.[1]
Members of the NML voted on fics they deemed "legendary" for Coneflower's page.[12]
The Newsies Mailing List Awards were first hosted in 2001, when they were run by Shasta and Filly.[13]
A website hosted pictures of list members, now offline.[14]
2002
DeadJournal account nmlrants was created on 13 March 2002 by agentvoodoo, described as "a community for members of the Newsies Mailing List to post their rants."[15] Agentvoodoo described Blaze and Luna as "List Mommies" and complained that "people need to grow up" in the first rant posted.[16]
Blaze hosted the short-lived new version of the Official Newsies List Fan Fiction Page, only archived in 2002, which included at least 231 fics.[17] There also existed the Official NML Newsies Registry 2002.[18] A different NML registry, or possibly the first redone, was created in July 2002.[19]
On November 25, 2002, the Yahoo! Group daily-prophet_newsies was created for NMLers who were also fans of Harry Potter.

Reflections
The NML was a good thing, a great thing, a wonderful thing! It brought so many people together. We were a family really. Never have I found such camaraderie in a fandom besides LOTR (but they were a much much older crowd). I often wonder where all my NML comrades, even the ones I didn't talk to much, are now. Guess we were of a different generation.coneygoil[38]
