Never Say Never is a Steve/Tony AU by lumediluna. It was written for Avengers Big Bang 2012.

Summary: When 24-year old Tony Stark goes out to distract himself from the fact that he has been put on probation by his company's board of directors due to his partying lifestyle, he bumps into (quite literally) a law student named Steve Rogers, who has recently lost his father and has been 'dragged out' by his best friend to "have some fun." "Some fun" turns into shots, Vegas, and...marriage? Except, someone on probation is not allowed to have a quickie marriage. The only alternative is to somehow continue the farce until the probation is over, but that's not as easy as it sounds when very real feelings start being added to the equation.

borealisdawn created three pieces of fanart for the story.[1]

Recs and Reviews

After being put on probation by his board, Tony goes out to blow off some steam. He meets Steve, who Bucky has dragged out to distract the struggling law student from the recent death of his father. ‘Letting off some steam’ turns into a Vegas marriage that they must maintain if Tony is going to get off probation. Obie, true to character, is here to fuck things up.[2]

I really, really enjoyed reading this! I found it well-written in the technical sense and also with a nice balance of dialogue and introspection. For the most part it made for easy reading (no clunky sentences that made me pause) and the prose being descriptive, but not flowery to the point of parody. The back-story you've created is quite interesting and you've made it work seamlessly around the accidental marriage plot. It's an intriguing alternative to the established movie canon. I don't think I've read a story where Steve wasn't an art student, so having him pursue law was a refreshing choice. I would have perhaps liked to have seen a little elaboration on the formation of the foundation Steve and Tony's relationship (the two months where they played "happy families"). However, I understand that as a Big Bang fic, you were under time constraints. The hospital scenes, I feel, would have had a stronger impact with a little more back-and-forth between the characters when they had solidified a friendship. [...] I still found this a fantastic fic overall, with one of those endings that gave me a sense of closure, but also is open-ended enough that if you ever decided to pursue a sequel, it wouldn't feel shoe-horned in.[3]

This was really good. I loved how cliche their beginning was with going to Vegas, getting drunk, and then marrying each other. Nothing seemed rushed even though there were obvious time skips. This story definitely deserves a sequel.[4]
