The Mortal Instruments is a series of Young Adult fantasy novels by ex-fan writer Cassandra Clare.
Canon
The protagonist of The Mortal Instruments is Clary Fray, a teenager who discovers the magical world hidden from her by her Shadowhunter mother. See The Mortal Instruments on Wikipedia for more.
The book series consists of six novels:
- City of Bones (2007)
- City of Ashes (2008)
- City of Glass (2009)
- City of Fallen Angels (2011)
- City of Lost Souls (2012)
- City of Heavenly Fire (2014)
Adaptations
The first novel was made into a film in 2013, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, but was poorly received. Consequently, it was decided that the franchise be rebooted in TV format. The TV series, Shadowhunters, has a different cast and was better received; it was renewed for a second season in March 2016. It airs in the U.S. on ABC Family and globally on Netflix.
Fandom
The fanbase for The Shadowhunter Chronicles (the thirty-three book series, movie, and TV adaptation based around The Mortal Instruments) is a very good size. Most books by Cassandra Clare have been on the New York Best Seller list, proving it's popularity. The fandom for The Mortal Instruments has grown significantly due to the television show adaptation, Shadowhunters. Gen and slash fanfiction are very prominent in this fandom, mostly published at Archive of Our Own and Wattpad.
The two main ships in this fandom (though there are many other common ships) are Clace (ClaryxJace) and Malec (MagnusxAlec), both of which are canon. On social media platforms, The Mortal Instruments fandom can be found mostly on Tumblr and Twitter. Tumblr tags associating with this fandom are riddled a variety of edits, headcanons, quotes, and gifsets.
Malec was number five as one of the Top 20 ships reblogged in 2016 on Tumblr [1].
