Mixed canon refers to the incorporation of story elements from different versions of canon into a transformative fan work. For example, filling in the blanks of a movie adaptation with details from the original bookverse.
Mixed canon may be thought of as a crossover between two or more versions of one source material.
Fans often use their knowledge of a source material to build headcanons and fan theories predicting the storyline in the adaptation.
Examples

- Many Marvel Cinematic Universe fic writers have incorporated Clint Barton's comics backstory and hearing impairment into the movie version of the character.
- Many fans presume that the Young Justice cartoon adaptation follows the broad strokes of the DC Comics comicsverse unless otherwise stated. The show often josses their expectations of canon by subverting the original comic storylines, such as "reversing" the roles of Tara Markov and Brion Markov in The Judas Contract, and combining the origin stories of Cassandra Cain and Oracle.
- Jason Todd is a popular retroactive headcanon for the identity of the second Red X in the 2003 Teen Titans cartoon, despite the fact that the long-dead Jason was only reintroduced to the comicsverse as an antihero after the second Red X had already debuted.
