In series 8, Clara and The Doctor try and stop Missy as she tries to amass a cyberman army made from the consciousness of recently deceased humans.
At the beginning of series 9, Clara and Missy must team up to find and save The Doctor from his impending death.

The biggest piece of evidence for Clara's growth into being just like the Doctor is that the Master clearly wants to both jump her bones and reduce her to bones.[1]
There was a little enemyslash shipping of Clara and Missy after series 8, but the popularity of the pairing increased significantly after they teamed up together for two episodes at the beginning of series 9.
Common Tropes and Storylines in Fanworks
- Seeking each other out: it is not unusual in fics to have Clara and Missy seeking each other out for various reasons after the last time they saw each other in series 9. Sometimes Missy seeks out Clara because she has peaked her interest, and sometimes Clara will seek out Missy because she needs her help, for example rescuing the Doctor.
- Darkfic: because Missy is The Master, some Missy/Clara can include some darker elements, like dub-con, domination, and manipulation.
- Canon Divergence AU: where to diverge can vary, but having Clara and The Doctor not leave Missy on Skaro and instead have Missy travel with them seems to be somewhat common.
- Human AU: although rare, there are a few stories where Missy is human not a Time Lord, and her and Clara meet under more conventional circumstances, meet-cutes or meet-uglies
- Threesome/Polyam: the most common third partner being The Doctor, usually the Twelfth Doctor, but occasionally you'll find the Thirteenth Doctor as well.
