Speedrunning

Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Odyssey have had consistently large speedrun communities for years, and both are regularly featured at GDQ, a speedrun charity marathon that takes place twice a year in the United States.

Members and content creators of the speedrunning community also have their own fanbases. Popular Odyssey speedrunner and Youtube creator Smallant, as well as his friends CraftyBoss, cjya, and Fir, began playing a hide-and-seek multiplayer modded version of Super Mario Odyssey in 2022. These became many of these creators consistently best-performing videos, averaging nearly 1mil views each, and spawned a fanbase of its own.

Another group was Team 0%, dedicated to to beating every single level in Super Mario Maker 1 and 2. They successfully did so for the first game prior to the Wii U and 3DS online networks shutting down in April 2024.

Connections with Other Fandoms

Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog had a famous rivalry during the 90's console wars, however it dissipated once Sega stopped making consoles. Now, since the two franchises have crossed over on many occasions since then, their fandom's have become much friendlier toward each other.
