Canon

Mami and Homura have relatively few interactions in canon, primarily in the first three episodes where the two are actively antagonistic towards each other. They nearly come to blows on several occasions and Mami restrains Homura with her ribbons on two occasions, once in an attempt to murder her. This pattern continues in the Rebellion movie, where Mami and Homura fight in an intense action sequence.

Fan Reactions

HomuMami is a hard ship to make work. Not because it’s some ridiculous crackship, or even because it’s lacking in chemistry like I feel MadoSaya is, but simply because it’s hard to find a time in Homura’s life where she could emotionally connect to Mami. Homura meets Mami not long after Madoka, but the timing is important: Homura only meets Mami after Madoka saves her. From the second Mami and Homura first interact, Homura is already wrapped up in the emotional obsession with Madoka that dictates the course of her entire life.[1]

These two have such a perfect hateship dynamic, oh man. If “hateship” is even the right word for it, anyway… Mami is too sweet to not care about Homura (she panicked when Homura shot herself in Rebellion), and Homura still admires Mami a lot, even after all of the timelines she’s been through (when Mami said in Rebellion that she would’ve given up if it weren’t for Bebe, Homura was quick to tell her that she’s far stronger than she believes). But wow, they really do not get along.[2]

The more I rewatch the series, the more I see a deeper bond that needs to be dug up to work. Homura cares for Mami, even though in some timeline, they’re meant to be enemies. Mami really cares for her juniors, and she’s no exception. Even though they’re suppose to be enemies, Mami still lets her be, as long as she doesn’t get in her way. [3]

From "What Your Preferred Puella Magi Madoka Magica Ship Says About You" by Takerfoxx:

You’re a firm believer in the inherent eroticism of passive-aggressiveness.

You were tilting your head in a particular manner during that scene where Mami ties up Homura, and feel that how it ended was a real missed opportunity.

You had to pause The Rebellion Story for about five minutes after the gunfight, and after you continued you shouted, “Goddamn it, Sayaka!” out loud.[4]

Tropes & Fanon

  • Enemies to Lovers or Enemies to Friends to Lovers
  • Post-canon fics in which Mami and Homura come to care for each other after Madoka's ascension
  • Gun fights or gunplay, since both use firearms as their primary weapon
  • Bondage or BDSM, due to Mami's affinity for ribbons
  • Time travel, with Mami unable to remember the events of previous timelines where she and Homura were in love

Homura/Mami also appears as part of polyships with other characters (usually all five main characters), or in Five Times-style fics that explore Homura's relationships with each of the main characters across various timelines.
