Reactions and Reviews
Shari: This was such a fun read! Sort of the equivalent of watching a lighter Vince Gilligan episode. The Mulder and Scully scenes are funny, the original characters real hoots -- especially that wart-covered demon. ; ) Plausible told me they wrote it to see if they could write a funny case file -- well, they can!
jen: Sexual misunderstanding abounds, and a hysterical demon as well. [1]
This story has been on my hit parade since its debut in 2000. Malus Genius by MaybeAmanda and Plausible Deniability is a screamingly funny and inventive casefile with a helping of Mulder/Scully relationship on the side. The original characters are a hoot, and the personal and professional sides to the tale tie together well as poor Mulder copes with the idea of growing older. The demon got my vote for Original Character of the Year. Read this and then gobble up all their other separate creations, especially Amanda's "Epiphany" and the Young CSM series by Plausible Deniability. [2]
The title translates into "The Evil Spirit, or This Title Is Written In Latin for No Reason," which is exactly why you should read it. It's set in a high school, features a snarling Latin demon, a history teacher, and lots of dark, dry humor. Halfway to the health club, Mr. Kopeck discovered that the demon was in his gym bag. [3]
if ever there was a fic that felt just like an episode (well, without the racier parts) this would be it...and it's like a fun ep, not one of the boring ones...i like how the mulder/scully relationship issues are universal relationship issues and not really series related... [4]
155K. While this is one of the only humor stories that actually has ever made me laugh out loud while reading, there are some fairly deep issues infused throughout. I liked how the thread seems to pick up on some of the issues so nicely handled in Rush. Very nice MSR (already established) and realistic (not sappy) interaction. Wonderful work for both authors.[5]
Sometimes, a good-old fashioned casefile with a supernatural demonic force summoned by an unsuspecting small-town guy is just what the doctor ordered. This fic has a couple of great things going for it. First, the authors are top-notch. MaybeAmanda and PD should be high on your list of ‘must-read-everything-they’ve-ever-written’ XF fic authors.
But second, this casefile features one of our very favorite tropes: Established MSR. This is the casefile we WISH we could have seen during Season 7. There’s one particularly sexy and hilarious scene that takes place at the bed-and-breakfast that we literally loled while reading. Add a pretty creepy monster and some pretty darn well-rounded original characters into the mix, and you’ve got yourself one heckuva great casefile that may illicit a laugh or two.
Happy reading, loves![6]
Mulder thinks he's getting old, but a high school teacher has a more devilish problem. bugs said: I'll admit I'm not a big casefile reader but if a casefile comes written like this, I'll sit down for a spell. Incredible opening hook, tight, quick pace, fantastic characterization, just enough humor and *smut.* [7]
