Summary

Summary from publisher: "When the Archivist returns, asking only for Natalie's assistance, she agrees to help him...and not tell Nick that he's back. But Nick has his own problems dealing with an abrasive ex-cop whose brother is missing and presumed murdered. Then LaCroix asks him to watch after Janette, whom he suspects is being hunted."

Author's Foreword

Tliis is the sequel to "False Heart." If you've read it. you're one step up on the others and goody for you. If you haven't, bits of this novel might not make sense. We'll still be here if you want to go take a look at the first one. It's only a friendly warning.

After "False Heart," Karin had informed me that I had to write a sequel. At first declining most ungraciously, I later relented and said that I would if I received ten requests for one. I did. And here it is.

That isn't to say I didn't know what would happen in the sequel. It's just that I was waiting for the second season to start so I wouldn't get into the situation where the Garret Theory of Logical Progression would prove al too true and I'd write a chapter only to have it show up in some mutated form on a new broadcast episode a week later. [1] But the season was long in coming, the natives were restless, and I had to get on with my life. Despite a socialy active autumn (during which New jersey Transit made a bundle from my frequent trips to and from Manhattan, I memorized the layout of The Cloisters, and somebody started the third FK-Fic war), I wrote this great, walloping thing.

It tends to get a bit adult in spots (skip those bits if they disturb you) and violent in others (ditto), but I can assure you that there are no flesh-eating-cannibal-zombies involved. Trust me on this one.

I will continue to take credit for any typos, errors, and screw-ups. And I continue to thank to thank my ever-changing list of beta readers—Karin Weiss, Marian Gibbons, Lisa McDavid, Sandye Chisholm, Monica Seiler, Sharon Himmanen (who waited patiently for the Natalie chapters and was more than a kind soul for taking on the onerous burden of actually

posting this beast to the net), Jude Wilson, and Jennise Hall (beta reader pro-tem), for their attentiveness, corrections, and support (not to mention the occasional whine when I went three days without delivering the next chapter). Ann Larimer, of course, always merits special mention for having arted for my sake yet again (a cover!) with grace and a complete lack of remuneration.

Finaly, my regards to my Australian friends and fans (who seem to enjoy my work), my list friends and fans (who've been kind enough to send me their comments via e-mail), and to the college crowd in Florida (who I don't mind terribly for enjoying my work, but if you're going to bankrupt me, at least have the courtesy to send me e-mail and tel me what you liked about the darned thing!).

Perhaps I'll do right by you all and publish professionally some time.

Reactions and Reviews

This is the sequel to False Heart, and is nearly twice as long and just as good. Susan is wonderfully capable of writing novels that hold together and draw you in. Once again: if you like the Forever Knight characters and universe, and you're looking for a good, long read, give this a try. Trust me. One thing to bear in mind: this was written/posted in 1995, during second season. [2]
