Hinata Shouyou/Kozume Kenma is a pairing in the Haikyuu fandom.

Canon

Hinata and Kenma first meet early in the series, when Hinata gets lost on a run and spots Kenma sitting outside and playing a video game. They bond quickly and stay in contact over email and messaging despite living in different prefectures. They call each other by their first names and Kenma is willing to let Hinata practice with him after hours at training camp, despite hating to do any amount of extra work. Hinata's loud, outgoing personality seems at odds with Kenma's quieter and calmer nature, but they are friends nonetheless.

In the manga, Kenma has fun playing against Hinata at nationals. This is the first time Kenma admits to having fun having playing volleyball. Their direct rivalry in that game is depicted with intense visual metaphors, Kenma trapping Hinata in a bird cage and the two of them holding knives to each other's throats. When Hinata falls ill and has to leave the game against Kamomemedai, Kenma brings him a tablet to watch the game from, saying he's "just helping a friend." After high school, Kenma sponsors Hinata's professional volleyball career, but tells Hinata "if you stop being interesting, I'll drop you."

History

This ship is not quite a rarepair according to Haikyuu fandom standards, but isn't one of the most popular ships in the fandom either, second to Kagehina for Hinata and Kuroken for Kenma. Kenhina is not one of the top ten ships in this fandom on AO3. As of March 2020 there are 2127 works tagged Hinata Shouyou/Kozume Kenma on AO3.

Common Tropes in Fanworks

Fanwork for this pairing tends to be very cute and soft, emphasizing Hinata's cheerfulness to contrast with Kenma's shyness. Less common is very intense fanwork emphasizing the seriousness of their rivalry, although this grew more popular as the manga continued. There is a significant amount of fanart, perhaps more fanart than fanfiction although it is hard to determine for sure. Canon Compliant and AU settings are both popular. Canon compliant fic often contains Long Distance and Rivals to Lovers tropes as well as Texting.
