The pairing of John/Samantha is fairly popular in the Doom fandom (not including the same-actor crossovers). The LiveJournal community, Doomed Tryst, was created a year after the film was released and was semi-active from 2006 to 2012. Fanworks are still being posted every year at AO3 since 2009, so while the fandom is small, it's still fairly active.
