Jiuyuan is the slash pairing of Shen Yuan/Shen Jiu from the Scum Villain's Self Saving System (SVSSS) fandom. The two characters (both surenamed 沈 Shěn) are not canonically related - they however, share the same body, although at different points in time.
Canon
Shen Yuan is the protagonist of SVSSS, someone who dies while hate-reading Proud Immortal Demon Way (PIDW). He transmigrates into the body of PIDW's scum villain, Shen Qingqiu, previously named Shen Jiu.
Shen Jiu was a child slave, who in the end became a cultivator master, and one of the Peak Lords of Cang Qiong Sect, gaining the name Shen Qingqiu. In PDIW he is described as lecherous and he abuses his disciplines, most notably Luo Binghe, protagonist of PDIW. In SVSSS, he dies of a qi deviation when Luo Binghe is still a young discipline.
When Shen Qingqiu wakes up from the qi deviation, it's not Shen Jiu's soul in the body, but Shen Yuan's. Shen Yuan often and loudly condemns Shen Jiu, although he doesn't learn of Shen Jiu's past until later in SVSSS. The two never actually meet canonically.

Identity issues
Canon never addresses how the to characters share a surename. Officially, Shen Jiu is a character from a fictional novel in Shen Yuan's world. Fans, however, regularly bring up different 'solutions' and twists as to how they could be related to each other. These solutions are unrelated to shipping the characters: they frequently appear in both the platonic and romantic pairings of them.
Frequently used tropes
- Shen Jiu and Shen Yuan are the same person. This is usually paired with an in-time transmigration instead of an universe-hopping one, where Shen Yuan is either the reincarnation of Shen Jiu, or Shen Jiu traveled in time more than once: once to become Shen Yuan, then to become Shen Jiu again. Fanworks vary in keeping their memories intact or not.
- Shen Jiu and Shen Yuan are siblings. This appears most frequently in modern AUs or canon divergent AUs where there are either two Shen siblings from the start, or where Shen Yuan transmigrates into Shen Jiu's sibling.
- Shen Jiu and Shen Yuan share a body. This usually later ends up with one of them getting a new, separate body.
- Shen Yuan transmigrates into someone else. JiuYuan fics frequently use a master-disciple dynamic (similarly to the canonical Bingqiu one), or make Shen Yuan transmigrate into one of the other Peak Lords.
Shencest
More than one of the above used tropes bring a flavor of -cest (incest or selfcest) to the ship. Both kinds appear in fanworks, although incest is easier to come by. Additionally, it is not limited to works featuring transmigration; many modern AUs or alternate universes where the Shens are born siblings work with it.
