Short Canon Description
From For Those Who Came in Late #1:
Jake and the Fatman is one of the last survivors of the CBS class of 1987-88 (which included Beauty and the Beast and Wiseguy). Jake is the show that shouldn't have survived and did, due mainly to the cast's chemistry.Jake is your basic cop show although there is an attempt to give it a noir look and sound (the episode titles are all old Thirties and Forties standards and the songs are often used under the episode titles).
The pilot set the basic framework. McCabe was District Atoorney of Los Angeles, Jake was his ace investigator, who survived on the kindness of friends who lent him places to live (and his green Porsche; McCabe, in contrast, drove a horrible rusty old clunker). Derek joined them in that episode, fresh out of Yale Law School. In the first season, the trio solved crimes like Columbo—we saw the murderer and watched them catch the crook.
The show was a marginal renewal that returned midseason 1988- 89, now in Hawaii (to take advantage of the empty Magnum facilities). To get them to Hawaii, Jake went to visit an old cop friend who turned up dead when he arrived. McCabe followed him to Hawaii to bail him out, Derek in tow. A retiring old friend tapped McCabe to replace him as Prosecuting Attorney (what they call the DA in Honolulu) and Derek became a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney. Jake became McCabe's investigator again, but while he had been a cop on detached duty in Los Angeles (a lieutenant no less), he was not while in Hawaii or thereafter.

They stayed in Hawaii until the start of the 90-91 season, when the threesome came back to the mainland in almost the same way they left — Jake involved in murder and the attorneys to the rescue.
