Inside Job is an animated science fiction workplace comedy created by Shion Takeuchi.
Canon
Inside Job takes place in a world where many conspiracy theories are real, and multiple clandestine organizations (including the Illuminati, Reptilians, and the corporate entity Cognito Inc.) are charged with perpetuating and covering up these conspiracies. The show follows Reagan Ridley, a genius roboticist, as she struggles to emotionally connect to her coworkers, rein in her paranoid father, and rise through the ranks of the deep state.
Supporting characters include:
- Brett Hand, a clueless but likeable yes-man hired to make up for Reagan's lack of people skills
- Rand Ridley, Reagan's paranoid father and the former CEO of Cognito Inc.
- J.R. Scheimpough, the CEO of Cognito Inc. and Reagan's boss
- Gigi, the head of Cognito's PR department and a connoisseur of office gossip
- Glenn Dolphman, the jingoistic head of Cognito's arsenal
- Dr. Andre Lee, a drug-addicted biochemist
- Magic Myc, an acerbic mind-reading sapient fungus from Hollow Earth who is "milked" for a chemical used in amnestic agents
Fandom
The show gained some early attention as it was executive produced by Alex Hirsch, whose work on Gravity Falls has made him a darling of western animation fandom.
Reagan and Brett have garnered the most attention from fans, as their struggles with social skills and a need for approval, respectively, have proven relatable for many viewers. Fans often embrace their woobish nature in the form of hurt/comfort works.
Reagan being autistic is a common headcanon and theme in these works (inspired in part by a running gag in one episode where Reagan is assumed to have Asperger's syndrome).
The most popular pairing in the fandom is Brett Hand/Reagan Ridley, and interest in a platonic version of their relationship is similarly high. After the airing of Part 2, the canon pairing of Reagan and Ron Staedtler also garnered some popularity. Other common ships include Andre/Brett, Andre/Myc, and assorted reader-insert pairings.
