hpchan was a LiveJournal community for underage Harry Potter fanworks. Most posts are locked to members and membership is moderated.
It was originally also a Yahoo! group but was TOSsed by Yahoo.[1][2][3] The mailing list gained almost 400 members in its first two weeks.[4]
As of 2006, the rules were posted on the profile, but by 2007 they were removed and placed in a friendslocked post.[5] The 2006 rules include:
- "Know your limits before you join. If you read or see something you find offensive and there is a warning, then you do not have the right to complain."
- membership is restricted to users over 18
- both slash and het are allowed
- "no flaming"
- no linking out; your fanwork must be posted to the community
- no manips or RPF[6]
hpchan may have been impacted by strikethrough, but because posts were locked, it is unknown what discussions took place, if any. A community of the same name was created on InsaneJournal around this time, also locked[7], but appears to have a different moderator, so whether these communities are related is unknown.
As of 2022, the LiveJournal community has 775 posts and 4,455 comments.[8]
HPCFC
hpcan hosted a challenge fest, with the first wave starting in June 2003. The second wave started in October 2003 and was hosted exclusively on the LJ comm due to the mailing list's deletion.
glockgal also hosted a HPChan Art Fest (HPCAF) "in conjunction" with the group.[9]
