Would it be of value to add a suggested archiving tool/option? There are some particularly powerful tools that could make archiving easier for editors, and the easier it gets the more likely they are to use them. --Corba (talk) 00:15, 1 December 2018 (UTC)

I always suggest people start with the WayBack Machine first. Then WebCite if the page cannot be archived at the WBM. For threaded LJ/DW comments, Archive.is is best. It also handles some Tumblrs and Twitter better than the WBM. We do suggest that if a link has been archived to click on the actual link to verify....oftentimes only a splash page or blank pages appear - this gives people the opportunity to run the link through a second tool. citing private correspondence

So, Fanlore:Citation#Exceptions says: "In some cases, an original poster (OP) or content creator may agree to let you quote and cite them in a wiki article. In these cases, the OP must grant approval prior to your quoting of the content on the wiki." and then says, "See the linking guidelines for further suggestions of how to cite non-public content." which leads to this page.

Then this page, Help:Citing sources, says, "In general, do not directly link to or quote content from private or semi-private fannish spaces such as chat rooms, private forums, friendslocked journals, private blogs, personal emails, and so on." and then links to Fanlore:Citation#Exceptions

But... I have permission to quote this private correspondence. I asked specifically and everything! Neither of these places tell me what the accepted citation format is, though. Obviously the user's name, but what other details? It was a private response to a tumblr ask that I sent, should I include any or all of that information? I have done this a lot, quoting from early 1990s mailing lists. I ask the person how they want to be quoted: real name (many of us used our real names back then) or other name (that they choose) or anonymous. You always include the location (name of tumblr or mailing list) and a rough date (in some cases all we have is a year) If this was via a private email you might say: "Private correspondence with [name of recipient] from [chosen ID of sender] dated [Date], quoted with permission." For a mailing list: "[Name]'s email to [mailing list/tumblr etc] dated [Date], quoted with permission."MeeDee (talk) 16:05, 3 December 2018 (UTC)

Archiving

I think we should move the bulk of the archiving info to its own page, or at least link to it from the help page or something, because it was really hard to find when I wanted to link someone to it. - Hoopla (talk) 00:42, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
