Giles/Ethan is the pairing of Rupert Giles and Ethan Rayne from the Buffyverse.
Canon
Ethan was a recurring character who knew Giles in the years before he joined the council. They were both involved in black magic and the occult during their rebellious youth. While Giles discarded his alter ego Ripper, Ethan remains involved with magic and the demon underworld. His spells often caused chaos for Giles and the Scoobies during his visits to Sunnydale.
Ethan was last seen in Season 4, when he was captured by The Initiative.

Common Tropes & Storylines
- Pre-canon works set when the two were still friends in the 1970s. Many of these works include Gile' alter ego Ripper. Fans of this pairing believe that the two shared a romantic relationship in their past, and this relationship is often the focus on pre-canon works.
- Post-canon works often show Giles rescuing Ethan from the Initiative, or Ethan working with Giles after he escapes.
- Magic regularly appears in fic pairing Ethan and Giles. These may be episode related fics set during Ethan's visits to Sunnydale, when his magic spells often cause chaos.
- Reconciliation - Despite their antagonistic relationship in canon, many fic show these two reminiscing fondly about their past and reconciling. Many works in this pairing would be considered Enemies to Lovers works.
- Some fics depict these two in a BDSM relationship.
- The threesome pairing Ethan/Giles/Joyce is also popular.
