Canon

Gabriel Lorca was the Captain of the USS Buran. At some point, his Mirrorverse counterpart replaced him, and Prime Lorca is presumed dead or lost in the Mirrorverse.

Mirrorverse

Mirror Lorca was on the run from Emperor Philippa Georgiou following a failed coup, when he escaped to a parallel universe. He took over the life of Prime Lorca and was assigned the Captaincy of the USS Discovery. He recruited Michael Burnham to his crew, and used the Discovery to travel back to the his own Universe. There, it is revealed that Lorca killed Burnham's mirrorverse double. Philippa Georgiou described Lorca to be a father figure to Burnham during her childhood. When Burnham reached adulthood, the relationship went beyond mentorship as result of Lorca's "grooming"

As Mirror Burnham's body had never been recovered, Lorca used Burnham impersonating her Mirrorverse counterpart, to gain access to the Emperor's ship. He claimed this was in an effort to gain intelligence, but was really planning another attempt on the Emperor's life. Burnham discovered his true identity, and revealed him to Georgiou who ultimately killed him.
