Five Nights at Freddy's 3 (FNaF 3) is the third game in the Five Nights at Freddy's indie horror game franchise by Scott Cawthon. It is proceeded by Five Nights at Freddy's 2 and followed by Five Nights at Freddy's 4.

Gameplay and Plot

Five Nights at Freddy's 3 continues to utilize similar gameplay. The setting is thirty years later, with the location set in a Freddy Fazbear's Pizza themed horror attraction called "Fazbear's Fright." The player, who is only acting as a security guard in the attraction, deals with "Phantom" versions of the old cast of characters while also dealing with a new character, Springtrap. As the plot progresses, it is revealed Springtrap is a combination of a human and animatronic, due to the ghosts of the murdered children luring William Afton into a spring-locked rabbit suit. William, getting stuck inside, died and possessed the suit. In the end the attraction burns down without any indication if Springtrap survived or burned. However, brightening the final image reveals Springtrap in the background, implying William Afton survived. The "bad" ending shows the souls of the children persisting in the robots, while the "good" ending shows their spirits being freed.

Shipping

On DeviantART, 2015, Springtrap and Golden Freddy were a relatively popular ship. Frequent fanart of the ship can be seen when searching the tag "Springtrap Ship" and sorting by Popular This Century. Self shipping was also used, but may not have been as popular in FNaF fandom 2015 as it would became later.

On Archive of Our Own, Dec 2, 2015, which was several months after the release of FNaF3, Five Nights at Freddy's had 892 fanfics. It's most popular ship was Phone Guy/Mike Schmidt at 52 fanfics.[1] Springtrap was tagged in 110 fanfics. The most popular ship for Springtrap was Golden Freddy/Springtrap with 18 fics, and the most popular additional tag was fluff with 12 fics. By Jun 10, 2016, nearly a year since FNAF3 and FNaF4 and few months before the release of Sister Location, Springtrap's tag had gone up to 160 works. Golden Freddy/Springtrap remained the top ship at 30 fanfics, but the most popular additional tag changed to Alternate Universe with 15 fics.[2]

Some fans may find distaste with ships involving Springtrap due to the original animatronics being possessed by children. However, at least one Redditor commented that they believed some shippers shipped the animatronics separately from the souls possessing them. A few of the comments from this Reddit thread are below.[3]

The Puppet is a sweet little girl, and Springtrap is a sadistic adult murderer. This shipping is just wrong and inappropriate, they basically shipping a little girl with a adult.

Honestly there is no annoying ship to me, then springtrap x circus baby, I am not explaining what's wrong with it. You figure it out.

I'm not a shipper, but I'm pretty sure they're just shipping the animatronics themselves, and not the souls within them.

It's more or less the characters rather than the lore behind them that's the attraction, although I wouldn't describe the enabler of the death of countless and basically a savage beast that has to be caged by the time of FFPS as sweet.

Ship Names

Ship names unique to FNaF3 are generally related to Springtrap, as he is the only "new" character introduced in FNaF3. Fans continue to use similar ship naming conventions as past games, utilizing the character x character format with additional, less used, portmanteau names. Portmanteau ship names with Springtrap are usually formed by adding -trap or -spring as a suffix. Ship names are listed below.

  • Springtrap/Bonnie - Bontrap
  • Springtrap/Golden Freddy - Goldtrap or Goldspring

Theories

Purple Guy had his name revealed to be William Afton a few months before FNaF3 via a tie-in book titled The Silver Eyes. This may have caused a schism between the fans who had adopted Rebornica's Purple Guy AU that had previously named him Vincent Bishop. One comment on Reddit said: "Even after William Afton became canon, some couldn't let go of the Vincent Bishop name."[4] Another Reddit comment chain about the contention over William's name is below.

I met someone who still used it unironically and when I corrected them (cause I thought they were just misinformed/hadn’t been around since the old days) they got so mad[5]
[PIGGYPOP1999]
yeah like one time i was playing a KAHOOT FNAF QUIZ and one of them was "who is purple guy" so i clicked WILLIAM AFTON but it was "wrong" and the "correct" answer was VINCENT
