Five Nights at Freddy's 2 (FNaF2) is the second title in the Five Night's at Freddy's horror game franchise, and is a prequel to the first game. It is proceeded by Five Nights at Freddy's and followed by Five Nights at Freddy's 3

Plot and Gameplay

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 has similar gameplay to FNaF 1. The player plays as another security guard named "Jeremy Fitzgerald." Just like the first game the player is stuck to one spot and they have to preform ritualistic actions to keep the roaming animatronics from killing them. In FNaF 2, the original animatronics were scrapped or used for parts to create cuter "toy" versions of the original main cast. These are toy Freddy, toy Bonnie, toy Chica, and toy Foxy "Mangle." Phone Guy calls each night revealing that a police investigation has been happening during daytime hours at the pizzeria. Mini-games reveal an underlying plot where a purple humanoid lures away the animatronics and destroys them, implying that this is is man who killed the five children that were referenced from the first game.

On the fifth night Jeremy receives a check that reveals the year is 1987, meaning FNaF 2 is a prequel to FNaF 1. At the end the pizzeria shuts down. However, Phone Guy states that the toy versions of the animatronics will be scrapped and their older counterparts (the ones from FNaF 1) would be revamped for a new restaurant.

On Archive of Our Own FNaF 1 was not very popular; by October 2014 it had 65 fanworks and only 7 of those were labeled as a relationship. FNaF fanfiction and shipping content would expand upon the release of the second game in Nov 2014. By Dec 23, 2014, AO3's FNaF fanfic count increased to 208 and ships listed under the relationships filter did as well. The most popular ship on AO3 for FNaF 1-2 in Dec 2014 was Chica/Bonnie, with 10 fanfics. 123 more fanfics were added by Feb 2015, one month before the third game's release. Chica/Bonnie remained the most popular ship with 12 tagged works, followed by Freddy Fazbear/Foxy with 10 and Foxy/Mike Schmidt with 10.

Shipping charts were popular on DeviantART after the release of FNaF 2.

Ship Names

While it appears the majority of fans used the (name) x (name) naming convention for ships, there were some portmanteau names made. For FNaF 2, this meant placing the word "Toy" in front of already existing portmanteau names. For example, Toy Freddy x Toy Bonnie becomes Toy Fronnie or ToyFronnie. A list of ship names unique to FNaF 2's release, uninfluenced by games that came after it, are below.

Theories

After it's release fans immediately began making theories for FNaF 2, some building upon theories from the first game. The growing popularity of FNaF and its theorization community was made even more apparent by multiple Tumblr blogs for FNaF theories that began in late 2014-early 2015.

Some continued trying to theorize who caused the Bite of 87', as well as who was bitten. One anon's theory was that it had been the murderer "Purple Man" who was bitten by Mangle:

Hello, again. Um, I'm the one who asked earlier about your theory on the murders and the bite. And it did help a lot! But I wanted to share my theory as well, if it's okay. Well, I think that the Purple Man's first kill is at FFD and then the company moved. But the Purple Man returned, as the morning security guard, and before Jeremy could take his place, he was about to murder a child again, but was bitten by an animatronic (Mangle), thus creating to Bite of '87...

A user on steam by the name scrotumboss1907 posted a few of their theories for FNaF 2. Many of their theorizes revolved around the idea that the main character was actually dead after being stuffed into a Freddy suit, and that they were in the finally moments of a dream before death. They believed that the Puppet was the real murderer and correctly theorized that the Puppet had stuffed the children into the suits. Lastly, one of their other unique theories was that FNaF 2 wasn't a sequel nor a prequel, due to there being no confirmation of the time FNaF 1 took place. Instead the two games were theorized to take place at the same time at different locations, due to Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria possibly being a chain.

At the time some players of this community called the Marionette Mr. Jack due to being in a Jack-in-the-Box. A Steam user by the name of Master Eddo claims to have come up with "Mr. Jack" on a whim. This nickname would come before players realized the Marionette was possessed by a little girl named Charlotte Emily.

Other varied theories from the Steam community are below.

• Some players didn't believe that FNaF 2 was a prequel and instead viewed it as only a theory.

• Player fat pikachu theorized that the Puppet was also Golden Freddy. They believed Golden Freddy was being controlled by the Puppet and cited how in canon humans could enter some of the suits and that Golden Freddy had no endoskeleton. This theory was that the Puppet was actually inside of Golden Freddy.

• Player IceWolf theorized that the main character of FNaF 2, Jeremy, was killed by and became Freddy after his first tour. In this theory the events of the game are FNaF 1 flashbacks from Jeremy. IceWolf uses this theory to explain the "IT'S ME" on the walls of FNAF 1, saying they were from Jeremy remembering that he was a human.

Rebornica's Purple Guy AU

The purple humanoid was also a topic of discussion, and due to the character having little to no canon aspects applied to him fans created an abundance of fanon. The most popular may have been created by BNF fanartist Rebornica who formed an AU around the character. She named the (at the time nameless in canon) character Vincent. A 2015 Reddit thread on r/fnafcringe by a deleted user explained the popularization of the Vincent AU, and some of it's influence on wider FNAF fanon.

Okay so basically this tumblr user named Rebornica had this FNAF AU which included their own interpretations of the characters from the game. When the second game came out, it included a new character: the purple killer. Rebornica added him to their AU as a new character named "Vincent". They're the reason why you see the killer drawn something like this.

Everything was fine until it started getting really weird. They started to make the character lean towards this weird sexual route. Because a huge portion of Rebornica's fanbase is/was made up of hormonal young girls, they latched on to the character. Rebornica kept getting these creepy sexual messages from these girls directed towards the new character and it started getting weird and gross fast.

A voice actor from Tumblr attempted to do a voice impression for Rebornica's "Vincent". He gave him this really deep rugged voice and requests for him to say certain quotes from the game and from Rebornica's comics started to pile on. Soon enough, he too started getting weird sexual messages from these girls to say some disgusting shit. Here's his response to all of this: link.

Rebornica's portrayal of the killer was starting to grow a huge fanbase, and by the time they deleted all traces of their FNAF AU, "Vincent" was now accepted by a lot of kids as being the killer from FNAF.

TL;DR: Hormonal young teenage girls have weird fetishes and now its everywhere.
