Fictionmania is an archive for fiction about themes of gender-changes, cross-dressing, and transgender characters, much of it erotic. The archive has been active since 1998. As of 2022, the site contains over 40,000 stories. The majority of these stories are original fiction, however fanfiction can be found in the pop culture category on the site. The site holds stories created partly or wholly by AI beyond those created by flesh and blood writers.

From the archive's FAQ:

Fictionmania explores gender. This can be done in many various ways. Within that concept, the variety is endless.

Many stories feature a transformation. A majority of these are a transformation from one sex, into the other.

You can find a sweet, sentimental G-Rated romance, or a down-and-dirty forced feminization, XXX-Rated story. There are stories about married couples who magically switch bodies and stories of husbands and boyfriends wearing panties in secret. There are stories of transformations in many genres, from Science Fiction to fetish. You can find realism and wizards, age transformations with gender transformations and autobiographical tales, comic book super heroes and Anime characters, everyday people and the very kinky. In short, just about anything you can imagine. The only common thread is the presence of gender exploration.

There are stories on FM that are first efforts by beginning writers and stories as slick and professional as you'd find in any commercial book or magazine. You can also pick stories to fit your available time, from a five-minute read, to close to novel length.[1]

History

From the archive FAQ:

In late 1997 Mindy Rich bought servers and programmed software, launching www.fictionmania.com in February of 1998. She read and formatted all of the stories herself, figuring that she would get maybe two or three a month. Soon there weren't hundreds of TG stories available for free, but thousands.

By December of 1999, Mindy was overworked at FM, which was affecting her health. A temporary illness, combined with some controversy at the time on the hyperboards, was wearing her down. She shut FM down and a month later, shut her list serve down as well.

A group of authors asked if they could run the server for her. After getting reassurances that the operation would remain the same, she decided to let FM continue. The Taskforce (think board of directors) was born. Mindy let the Taskforce operate the server until a new home was found.

Sue took charge as webmaster and began adding new stories. She recruited Anne-Mal as a helper. These two added stories for the first months of the Taskforce's running of Fictionmania. When they discovered the enormous task that Mindy was doing, it was made clear that more help was needed. Because of real life needs, Sue has had to drastically cut down on the number of stories she could upload

Talea is now the head volunteer and uploads almost all stories.[2]

Structure

Fictionmania allows for searching and tagging stories by way of categories and keywords. The site describes the difference between the two as, "Category relates to the whole transformation theme of the story. Where as Key Words relate to scenes or small parts of a story." Users are able to search a variety of ways including: by category, by keyword, by multiple categories and keywords, by character age, by author, by character names before and after transformation, by date, or by rating, among others. Users can also exclude categories and keywords from their search. Some other features of the site include author profiles and the ability for users to leave reviews on stories.

Stories on Fictionmania can have multiple categories and keywords applied. Some common types of category are categories indicating why a character is changed, how a character is changed, and other tropes and kinks. Categories are also used to indicate if a story is set in a number of shared universes on the site. Categories can also be used to indicate genre (action/adventure, horror, humor, sweet/sentimental), format (comics, drabbles, poetry, puzzles), or setting (historical, Medieval, real life situations, sci-fi, Victorian, workplace). Some unique categories are "Female to Male Transformations" (whereas almost all the rest of the stories on the site are male to female transformations) and "Pop Culture" (the category for fanfiction).

Commentary

Fictionmania is a free archive of user-contributed stories on the theme of gender change. If you were trying to figure out what was going on with your gender in the late nineties and early aughts, you tended to end up there. Its stories, on the whole, are not politically or stylistically progressive, but it’s accumulated, like, forty thousand stories over the last twenty-five years, so it’s definitely doing something that’s compelling for a lot of people. I mean, how many websites have been around since the late nineties?[3]

I got asked at my launch, ‘Isn’t it bad to have mentioned Fictionmania? Now all these cis people are going to look at Fictionmania.’ Sort of. Yea, there’s going to be some embarrassing things there, but whenever you go to a repository of erotica you’re going to find something embarrassing. Go to any repository of cis women’s fantasies — there’s going to be embarrassing shit there. Definitely look at the porn that men consume. Everything in the porn that men consume is horrific. To basically be like, ‘it’s only bad when it’s trans’ — why are we suffering under that unfair burden? On top of which, if you look at Fictionmania, it’s probably the largest repository of trans women’s writing in the world. People talk about Detransition, Baby as the first trans book, or whatever, people say that kind of stuff. Well, here’s an archive of millions of words, written by, collectively, tens of thousands of authors, so if you figure there’s tens of thousands of authors, there’s hundreds of thousands, if not millions of readers. If you can take away the question of shame and say, ‘What is this archive?’ You start seeing it as an archive of a certain kind of samizdat, or trans culture that gets passed hand to hand, or people stumble on, that gets built collectively. It’s actually a pretty fascinating, interesting place with its own literary forms and things like that.[4]
