Fan Fiction is Protected by Copyright Law! is an essay posted at Writers University. It is by Patchmonkey.
Intriguingly enough, as derivative works, fanfiction is protected by copyright law as long as the words and syntax are novel. The author of such a work will not own the pre-existing characters, but they do own the right to the words and syntax, which, for lack of a better term, makes the story. Now then, there are some standards for copyright protection.
