Final Fantasy X-2 is the sequel to Final Fantasy X. It was the first direct sequel in Final Fantasy history.
Synopsis
The events of X-2 take place roughly two years after the end of Final Fantasy X. The story is narrated by Yuna, an homage (and in places, direct response) to the previous game's first-person narration by Tidus.
Having defeated Sin, Yuna joins her cousin Rikku and a mysterious warrior named Paine as a sphere-hunter -- a person who searches for long-lost recordings of Spira's past. After finding a mysterious sphere with images of a man who looks a lot like Tidus, Yuna is pulled into a conflict between the various factions vying to fill the power vacuum left behind after the fall of The Order of Yevon.
Fandom
Final Fantasy X-2 fandom originally started as an offshoot of the FFX fandom. A separate section for FFX-2 wasn't created on Fanfiction.net until [date??], and some archives still combine them (for example, Final Fantasy Press lists fanworks for the two games in a single section). Whether FFX-2 and FFX are considered separate fandoms or a single fandom depends on who you ask. Most people who have played FFX-2 have also played FFX, but not all, and many fans of FFX either didn't play FFX-2 or disliked it. FFX-2 is a polarizing issue in the Final Fantasy fandom -- it has its fierce defenders and equally fierce detractors.
There is a substantial FFX/FFX-2 community on LiveJournal. It was very active for about two years, from 2005 to 2007. Posting and discussion slowed down not long before the Strikethrough controversy and never really picked back up, although it has gone through spurts of activity since. Another resurgence began in August 2009, thanks to a creative outpouring started by Final Fantasy Exchange.
