Emperor AU fics often portray a character who is not an Emperor in canon, as the leader of an Empire. Empress AU fics also appear. In some shipping works, an Emperor and Empress can rule side by side, while in others the ruler is paired with an Imperial Consort. This trope is particularly popular in Star Wars fanworks, where they are often canon divergent works rather than full blown AUs.
Star Wars
Variations on the Emperor AU fic appear across all three Star Wars trilogies, with many different characters cast as Emperor or Empress of the galaxy.
- Emperor Vader sometimes rules alongside his wife, Padme Amidala. In other works Empress Amidala was the sole ruler, sometimes with Anakin and/or Obi-Wan as her Imperial Consort.
- Emperor Hux works were particularly popular after the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
- Renperor refers to works depicting Kylo Ren as Emperor.
- Empress Rey works became very common after the release of The Rise of Skywalker. This trope predates that film, and sometimes overlaps with Renperor works. In many of these fics, Rey became Empress by marriage. In other pre-TROS AUs, Rey was sometimes Empress by birth, as Rey Palpatine.
- Emperor Solo is an example of a collaborative headcanon developed on Tumblr in 2018, wherein Han Solo becomes Emperor of the Galaxy.
- Emperor Cody occasionally appears. This is usually in AUs where the clones stage a coup before or after Order 66, killing Palpatine and making Cody the new Emperor.
