David Kano was a supporting character during Year One (Season One) of Space: 1999 and is seen in 23 of 24 episodes. He did not appear in the pilot episode "Breakaway". Kano was portrayed by actor Clifton Jones.

His title is "Computer Operations Officer" and he is the computer expert (replacing Ouma in "Breakaway"). He is usually addressed by his surname.

Kano addresses the computer as "she", and is defensive of others who criticize Main Computer, as notably seen in the episodes "Black Sun", "Guardian Of Piri", "The Last Sunset", and "The Testament Of Arkadia".

He took part in an experimental program on Earth to link the memory and calculating ability of a computer to the thinking ability of the human brain. A complex of fiber sensors were implanted in the cortex of his brain. The other three subjects ended up incapacitated; Kano was the success story ("Guardian Of Piri").

In early episodes, he routinely stands next to the computer wall in Main Mission. In "Missing Link" he is shown at his own desk, on a rotating pedestal. It is the only desk, apart from Koenig's, with a screen (but not seen in use).

Kano's other interests include chess, which he has programmed computer to play. He plays Dr. Mathias in "Black Sun" and Commander Koenig in "Dragon's Domain". He reveals a temper in "Missing Link".

In the Powys Media Space: 1999 novels, Kano is introduced as Ouma's night shift relief.
