Reactions and Reviews

The long awaited DARK FIRES is now available. If you haven't received your copy yet, write and inquire. If you'd like one, cost is $3.50. The volume contains quite a bit of material... I'll take it story by story. "The Beckoning Spirit", by yours truly, is set in Parallel Time 1848, and is my idea on what developed in the relationship of Bramwell and Catherine Collins. The vision of her dead sister Daphne--her husband's first wife--on the eve of the birth of Catherine's child, fills her with doubt and guilt over taking her sister's place...along with the question-does Daphne want her to join her in death? "The Forfeit", by Edlynne Bond, takes place in 1840 "regular time' and explores the shadow that falls upon the newlyweds Quentin and Daphne...for Daphne's nights are visited by tormenting dreams, of Gerard/Judah Zachary...calling to her from the depths of hell. "First Meeting", and "Diary 1840," both poems by Barbara Fister-Liltz, explore the depths of Daphne's love for Quentin. "Just Reward": Rev. Trask and Abigail Collins finally get what's coming to them. By Marcy Robin. "Kitty's Decision" or "A Victorian Love Story" by yours truly. The first DS story I ever wrote, way back in TWODS 1 & 2, was "Kitty's Choice". Now, as I've often stated, I like all possibilities explored...and so this story is the reverse of that original one. The volume continues with two poems by Edlynne Bond--"Maggie, My Love", a lament for what has been and can no longer be, and "Passion, Passion", an exploration of the dilema Catherine Herrtdge faces in choosing to wait for Bramwell, or choosing to marry Morgan Collins. An art portfolio by the incomparable Janet Meehan follows—the Bramwell/Catherine drawing is stunning, and the rest are terrific, too. Next, one of the best pieces of DS poetry ever writter--"Reflections", by Barbara Fister-Liltz, an exploration of the changing relationship between Barnabas and Willie, from hatred and violence to respect and friendship, a subtle and delicate exploration of the complexities and shades of an unexpected trust and loyalty. "Winter of the Flame", by yours truly; prior to PARADOX my longest DS story. This concerns Desmond Collins, and how, on his world tour, he discovered an ancient Egyptian mystery...and how Laura Collins, a half world distant from Maine, touched the lives of all who lived there. "Catherine/Chain of Pride", also by yours truly, along with Edlynne's "Passion, Passion", is a poetic exploration of Catherine, Bramwell and Morgan. "Eternity Now", by Marcy Robin, is an 'alternate possibility' story set on Widow's Hill, where Josette again makes a choice... And "Dark Fires" by Edlynne Bond rounds out the volume...giving the tart tongued Countess duPres a past with a most unexpected lover… MIRANDA is not yet out. I have been told a spring release is planned. If you have any questions about it, please don't write to me, but to Patricia. [1]
