The pairing of Damon/Bonnie is a is a non-canon ship in The Vampire Diaries fandom.

Canon

Damon and Bonnie initially had a cold and sometimes antagonistic relationship. Bonnie blamed Damon for Caroline Forbes becoming a vampire. They were forced to work together on many occasions at the behest of their friends and to achieve common goals.

Trapped in the 1994 Prison World, Bonnie and Damon are stranded, with no home of returning home and they settle into a domestic routine. Bonnie's magic releases Damon from this prison world and he is determined to bring her home.

Fandom

The pairing of Bonnie/Damon appeared in the TV fandom at the start of TVD season two, growing slowly in popularity.[1] The interest in this pairing may have been encouraged by their relationship in the books, as the two shared at best an antagonistic relationship in TV canon, despite Bonnie's decision to save Damon's life at the end of season 1.

Even as the two grew closer during the course of the series, many still considered these two a crackship.[2] Others basing their theories on their close connection in the books, and their growing friendship on the show, believed it could be an endgame pairing. Bamon shippers were vocal in their support of this pairing, leading to tensions with Delena shippers. The ship war occurred mainly on Twitter, Tumblr and fanpop, with creators very aware of the conflict in the fandom.[3]

While many fans were sorry to see Dobrev/Elena Gilbert leave the show, many Bamon fans hoped that her exit could lead to Bamon becoming canon.[4]
