ConClave was a Michigan-based science fiction convention held annually from 1976 to 2011, and then from 2013 to 2016.
ConClave's mission is to celebrate Fantasy and Science Fiction in all its forms. Art, music, theatrical performance, film, animation, television, fantasy role-play, renaissance reenactments, gaming and for-real. From writers to spaceship pilots, rennies and furries, ConClave is a gathering for anyone with a sense of wonder.conclavesf.net homepage [1]
History
This article or section needs expansion. |
ConClave was founded in 1976 by Waldo and Magic, Inc., Eastern Michigan University's science fiction club. The first convention was held in the university's student union, but the second was held at a Ramada Inn in Romulus, Michigan and attended by Robert A. Heinlein, the namesake of the original science fiction club.[2]
Subsequent con guests included Theodore Sturgeon, Timothy Zahn, and Juanita Coulson, among many others. By 1995, at least three guests won Hugo awards the same year they attended ConClave, a trend known to attendees as the ConClave Curse.[2]
Fan Experiences
In a 1991 rec.arts.sf.fandom discussion regarding Timecon's Rule 6, fan Steve Simmons mentioned that ConClave once held nude swimming parties.
Heck, Conclave used to schedule a nude swimming party. The hotel unofficially supported it to the extent of supplying paper to cover the pool windows (indoors in October in Michigan) and instructing the security guards it was a private party, badges only. The only thing they insisted on (besides covered windows) was a Red Cross certified lifeguard. I'd hate to think about how that'd go over today.
