A character insert fanfiction (or quest) involves a character being transported to a new world, usually via reincarnation. This genre has a lot of similarities in theme and tropes with SI OCs and peggy sue time travel, but character inserts don't have meta or future knowledge of their new world. Character inserts may also be canon characters, usually transported into a new canon, as a kind of crossover.
