Category talk:Merlin
The disambiguation for the Merlin pages is only going to get messier when the Camelot series starts in April. I think we should a) get rid of the double disambiguation in parentheses, b) get rid of the disambiguation in the middle of a page name and c) adjust the disambiguation for clarity. While many people may know that BBC stands for British Broadcasting Corporation and is the principal state-owned public service broadcaster in the United Kingdom (quoting Wikipedia here), other people (especially not from the UK) may not know that. It gets more complicated if people take their cues from that and start disambiguating Camelot as Camelot (Starz) because a lot of people won't know what that means.
For clarity and easier use of disambiguation I suggest the following changes:

- There are other TV series called Merlin, but they may never get a page on Fanlore. There's also the Sam Neill miniseries, though we could just disambiguate with "miniseries" if it comes to that. I don't know if it has a fandom anyway. So, Merlin (TV series) sounds good to me. (One issue: we have some disambiguations that say "TV series" and others that say just "TV". I'd like to pick one or the other type and be consistent.[1])
- For characters, the current disambiguation strategy is to not include "character" in the parenthetical, but it might make sense to change that for all disambiguated character pages. This plan might help with the problem of Sherlock Holmes character pages. [2]--æþel 18:41, 19 March 2011 (UTC)
- I suggested Merlin (TV series) because that's the way Wikipedia disambiguates it and because it's more precise but just "TV" is fine too. (Btw, Wikipedia disambiguates the Merlin miniseries as Merlin (film) - I guess we could maybe name it Merlin (TV movie)? If we ever need to.)
- We do have Harry Potter (character) and disambiguate zines, fanfic, vids, etc. as Name (Fandom zine), Name (Fandom vid) so I thought continuing that for characters might work. ^_^ Also, yes. Sherlock Holmes is another fandom that could benefit from tweaking our disambiguation strategies. The thing is, disambiguating just by fandom works for most characters because names are easily recognized as names and adding a fandom makes it obvious that it's a character. Except when the fandom name is also a character name. --Doro 19:06, 19 March 2011 (UTC)
- Do we need more opinions or can we move the pages? --Doro 20:06, 7 April 2011 (UTC)
- I can move the pages later today.--æþel 17:01, 9 April 2011 (UTC)
- Yay! \o/ I added an alternate suggestion for the Merlin characters (who aren't Merlin) because they only need disambiguation for characters in other shows while Merlin needs disambiguation for the character in other shows and a TV series, so it would make sense to keep the disambiguation shorter for the other characters. What do you think? I would be happy with either version. (And then we can look at the Sherlock pages next... *g*) --Doro 17:20, 9 April 2011 (UTC)
