Blades in the Dark is a fantasy TTRPG by John Harper. Published in 2017 after a successful 2015 Kickstarter, Blades in the Dark has become exceptionally popular in the TTRPG scene and has spawned a number of other indie games based on its Forged in the Dark game system.

Several actual play series with sizeable fandoms have also played either Forged in the Dark games or Blades in the Dark itself, expanding awareness of the game to fans who may not necessarily have extensive experience or familiarity with TTRPGs. Examples include The Adventure Zone's Steeplechase campaign, and Friends at the Table's Marielda, Twilight Mirage, and PARTIZAN seasons.[1]

Forged in the Dark

The Blades in the Dark system, Forged in the Dark, is licensed under a Creative Commons license that permits others to use the system to develop their own games. Within seven years of Blades in the Dark's release, more than 300 games had been published using the Forged in the Dark system.[2]

Evil Hat Productions, the company that published Blades in the Dark, has published several additional games using the Forged in the Dark system: John LeBoeuf-Little's zombie game Band of Blades and space opera game Scum & Villainy, and Andrew Gillis' magical girl game Girls by Moonlight. Popular Forged in the Dark games by other game developers include Beam Saber by Austin Ramsay, a game about mecha pilots, and CBR+PNK by Emanoel Melo, a cyberpunk game.
