betts is a writer of fanfiction and original fiction. She runs the Fanauthor Workshop, a creative writing workshop aimed at fanfiction writers, and is Editor-in-Chief of OFIC Magazine, a literary journal which publishes original fiction written by fanfiction writers, often with a particularly fannish sensibility. She also writes and publishes a roughly monthly newsletter of writing advice.

OFIC Magazine
We welcome work that may, in another time, have been referred to as “lemons.” We enjoy everything from smut with emotional resonance to character exploration genfic. We like happy endings, sad ones, bittersweet or ambiguous ones. We do romance; we do heartbreak. We want the dark twisted stuff, the hurt with comfort, the hurt without comfort, the light fluffy “and they were roommates” AUs. We’re not so big on plot. Mostly, we want work that makes us feel things.[1]
OFIC Magazine is a quarterly journal publishing literary fiction by fanfiction writers. It aims to occupy the overlapping space between zine and lit mag. The magazine published its first issue in April 2022. betts has been Editor-in-Chief since its inception.
Fanauthor Workshop
The Fanauthor Workshop is an MFA-style creative writing workshop led by betts. It has run twice, in autumn 2017 and spring 2022. It aims to provide a supportive space for fanfiction writers to receive constructive feedback on fanfiction, original fiction, or creative nonfiction, and also provide guidance, if wanted, on moving outside of fan spheres to traditional publishing or other creative writing programs.
