Bug-Eyed Monster or BEM is a fannish term for an early science fiction trope wherein aliens tended to be "grotesque creatures with huge, oversized or compound eyes and a lust for women, blood and/or general destruction."[1]

Professional science fiction illustrators drew plenty of BEMs for sf magazines, and BEMs were also popular in sf films.[2] Modern media fan artists tend to be more interested in portraits of their BSOs than in imagining the grotesque, but there are always exceptions.
