Angel of Death is a Jim/Blair story by cmshaw.

Summary:

An anti-death story -- Blair refuses to let Jim die.

Author note:

No sex. Only very lightly implied romance. NOT a death story; more of an anti-death story (sorry if that spoils anything, but I don't do or even read death stories, so I want to make it very clear: this is NOT a death story). Not beta'd.

Yes, I did write this the day before Easter, but I wasn't thinking of that at all until I got to the 'Easter' line near the end of the story. Anyway, this story has to be set just before next year's Easter in order to put it after the so-far-unwritten first story in this timeline tentatively titled 'Angel'. The inspiration for this story was Death and Dignity by Timothy Quill, a text on physician-aid-in-dying which I'm reading for a class and which is making me think a great deal about what I'd do in such a situation... so of course, I sat down and wrote a story about it, which eventually (thank goodness) turned into a story about Our Boys before it got too personal. I'll write the first two 'Angel' stories (wherein Jim and Blair go on a three-week vacation without so much as twisting an ankle) if I get nice feedback on this one.

The lines Jim quotes for Blair are from "And Death Shall Have No Dominion" by Dylan Thomas. Why am I on a Dylan Thomas kick? I dunno.

Reactions and Reviews

This is one of my favorite TS stories for many reasons, among them, Blair's faith and determination, his denial of death itself, Jim's dedication and devotion, and the miracle we all wish we could have.[1]

This is another author whose writing I always enjoy and recommend whole-heartedly, all of it. Of all her stories, this probably has the most serious theme. In it, a sorrowful Blair keeps vigil by the bedside of a critically injured Jim, refusing to let him die. A good theme, a lovely story.[2]
In the aftermath of danger, Jim and Blair celebrate being alive. This is one of my absolute favorite TS stories of all time. It's insightful, tender, funny, sensual. The characterizations are spot on, and Justine's vision of the guys' relationship is incredibly intimate and tender.[3]
Emphatically NOT a death story – it’s about life and devotion – in this fic cmshaw shows us a Blair utterly determined not to give up on his partner, and to look for answers way beyond what conventional science is telling all around him. And at the same time, Jim is wandering in a strange land – a perfect take on TS mysticism. This fic is a frequent re-read for me. The depth of friendship and love conveyed, never slushily, together with the lovely matter-of-fact ending, make the whole story deeply satisfying. And it’s beautifully written….[4]
Cmshaw is one of my favorite authors, who's finally beginning to post new stuff after a long absence from the public eye. Angel of Death is described as an anti-death story, but that doesn't begin to relate the poignant, powerful, evocative piece that this is.[5]
