Anders/Fenris, also known as Fenders, is the slash pairing of Anders and Fenris from Dragon Age II. It’s Dragon Age II’s most popular non-canon pairing, immediately after Hawke/Fenris and Hawke/Anders. There is also an OT3 adjacent to this pairing: Fenhanders.

Tropes in Fanworks

  • Enemies to Lovers: Anders and Fenris have an adversarial relationship in DA2. Some fanworks explore scenarios in which they grow closer and learn to love each other.
  • Hatesex: Some fics have their mutual dislike lead to angry or aggressive sex.
  • Mutual Understanding: Anders and Fenris both have suffered oppression and different kinds of slavery, but both are on opposite factions when it comes to their understanding of the other's situation, with Anders being a mage who desires freedom and Fenders an escaped ex-slaved to a Tevinter magister. Anders wishes to be free, like Tevinter mages, while Fenris distrusts mages, preferring them to stay in locked in Circles. In many stories both come to finally have a proper conversation around the topic of freedom, and may understand each other better, even supporting the others ideas or cause.
  • Spirit Warrior!Fenris: Not exclusive to the pairing, but often mentioned in a multitude of ways. Fenris boasts many similar abilities to the Spirit Warrior class from Dragon Age: Origins and this does not go unnoticed by Anders, either due to his time with The Warden, or because of Justice. This might have some crossover with Mage!Fenris.
  • Mage!Fenris: Not exclusive to the pairing, but a trope used in order to branch the distance between Fenris and Anders, due to Fenris' hate for mages. Anders usually accuses Fenris of hypocrisy.
  • Justice!Anders: Justice might have an infatuation with Fenris due to his lyrium markings, precipitating a relationship, either between them both, between Anders and Fenris, or the three of them.
  • Pain Relief: a general theme with Anders, due to his status as a Spirit Healer, but pertinent due to Fenris' constant pain from his lyrium markings.
  • Grey Warden!Anders: Not exclusive to the pairing, but used by fans in order to show Anders as more than a mage in Fenris' eyes, typically by showing prowess with a staff or sword, which might include being possessed by Justice.
  • Enslavement: Many stories feature one or both of them captured and enslaved. The trope can be used to make the other half of the pairing open their eyes to the suffering of the other faction. Dark themes and Dead Dove: Do Not Eat are common.
  • Memory Loss: Common enough as a way to make Anders and Fenris get along before they were both bitter, as both men seem to agree on most things, except magic. Might be the result of a magic incident, Justice leaving Anders' body, Fenris losing his markings etc.
  • Loss of magic: In contrast with Mage!Fenris, Anders might lose his magic. This would usually be a traumatic event for Anders, but it would facilitate any relationship with Fenris.
