The College Connection

It was formed as an official college activity in mid-July 1975 with a faculty advisor named Dr. Marvin R. Bensman.

In 1985, Dr. Bensman said:

A long, long time ago... 1968... in my college "Programming" course which I taught at the University of Vermont, and then at Memphis State, I began using Star Trek as a case study for how a TV program is created, lives, and dies. The main reason for this choice was the excellent boo on The Making of Star Trek, which was the only such example on the market.

My problem was that the program never died. It did the worst thing a case study can do: instead of being representative, it became atypical.

In 1975, it was arranged to have Gene Roddenberry speak at Memphis State. For some time, I had been corresponding with Susan Sackett to get a copy of the famed Blooper Reel for use in the classroom, but there was no way. So, we hoped to get videotape equipment into the lecture and get a recording of the Blooper as it was shown. Gene was much too sharp to allow us that opportunity (I later managed to find a source). Instead, I got an interview, and also had Gene speak in the Theatre & Communication department. Some dedicated individuals sought me out to obtain university recognition for their "fan" club, and to get a chance to meet the "Great Bird of the Galaxy." I agreed to serve as faculty advisor, and Allies became a recognized university activity. [1]
