Captain Alan Carter was a popular secondary character in both Year One and Year Two (Season One and Season Two) of Space: 1999 and is seen in 42 of 48 episodes. The character was portrayed by Nick Tate.

He was born in Australia ("The Mark Of Archanon").

Carter holds the Houston Base Championship for boxing.

Other sports include badminton ("The Last Sunset") and rugby league ("The Mark Of Archanon"). He owns the ball used in the Australia-Great Britain game, Swinton, 1963, with Harrison's signature, as Alan's grandfather used to play in Harrison's team.

He was assigned to Alpha, overseeing Meta Probe, about 1999 and holds the rank of Captain ("Breakaway"), although he is addressed as "astronaut" ("Black Sun").

As the head of Reconnaissance Section, Carter attends command conferences, assumes command ("New Adam, New Eve" and "Space Warp"). He is also part of the Radioactive Monitoring Team ("The Bringers Of Wonder, part 1").

Carter flies most Eagle missions as co-pilot if Commander Koenig is piloting. Besides being a skilled pilot, Carter is fiercely loyal, although he can be impulsive and emotional.

In "Alpha Child" and "The Last Sunset" he seems close to Tanya Alexander and has his arm round her in both episodes.
