Reactions and Reviews
Fun little love-at-first-sight, one-night stand for Kirk & Spock, both incognito, just before they meet on the Enterprise to start the 5-year mission together. [1]
Explanation of how both K and S happen to be on Luna the day before Kirk assumes command of the Enterprise is a bit lengthy. Things progress nicely, though, as Kirk offers to share his room with the stranded Vulcan. Both, to dodge the media, have assumed aliases and don't know they're bound for the same 5-years assignment. Kirk is instantly attracted and urges the stranger to call him "Jim," rather than the contrived “Mr. Tooley.” This is a portrayal of a more confident young Spock than we are accustomed to seeing. A nice touch. Still it’s surprising when it’s Spock who makes the inevitable offer, an invitation that causes him to utter for the first time, that treasured word, “Jim?” Their lovemaking is at first hurried, then slow and special as each contemplates that this is a one-night stand. When they part, each feels an emptiness—until the explosive [moment] when Kirk steps off the transporter to greet his new Science Officer. The inexperienced Vulcan is very uncertain until his new CO steps down and whispers, “My friends call me Jim.” [2]
Kirk and Spock follow through on their mutual attraction. Both are using false names not knowing they’ll see each other again at the transfer of command of the Enterprise to Kirk. Good story. Nothing insecure about this Spock, which is great.[3]
