ASTRAN is the newsletter for the Star Trek fan club, Atlanta Star Trek Association.
Issue 28
ASTRAN 28 was published in September 1984 and contains 8 pages. It was compiled by Tim Parley.
- club meeting schedule
- ASTRA to assist with Creation Con on October 13-14, 1984 at the OMNI International Hotel (will contribute a few slide shows about Star Trek, will have a club table to solicit members, volunteers were urged to call "the DataLine")
- ASTRA's Constitution (club rules and bylaws)
- ASTRA to host Emory Trek '84, November 10
- Atlanta's Star Trek DataLine now in service: ("ASTRA now has it’s own telephone! You can call 875-1701, twenty-four hours a day, for the latest Star Trek news, and information about ASTRA’s current events. We will have publicity cards with the phone number on them soon. If you need some cards to distribute, just call the number, and leave a message. It can also be used as away to contact any ASTRA officer for any purpose. A different message daily! Tell your friends!")
- ASTRA Enters the Computer Age ("A word about the newsletter for those interested; it was composed entirely on computer, using the Perfect Writer word processor. This allows us greater freedom to correct errors and make the ASTRAN as up-to-date as possible. It was typeset using PFONT (a sub-set of Fancy Font), in Sans Serif 8, 10 and 18 point type. ASTRA’s mailing list is managed by a custom program written in DBASEII by yours truly, and the labels are also printed with PFONT.")
- ASTRA Calendar Goes to Press Soon ("As many of you know, ASTRA has produced it’s own Calendar, the 1985 ASTRA Star Trek Historical Calendar. We printed a limited run (about 45 or so) of these during the spring [of 1984], and sold them at Dixie-Trek and Space Trek III (in St. Louis). Although we sold all the calendars that we printed, ve were hampered by the fact that ASTRA cannot get to the number of cons that a typical dealer can. So, we have made a deal with Steve and KathB Walker, of DATAZINE Publications, to print and market the calendar for ASTRA. The Walkers have contracted with Glenwood Distributing to print the calendar for them. The Calendar with be printed on blue paper in a much more professional style than the original calendars, and will sell for $4.95. All of the fantastic historical information, and Don Harden’s cartoons will be there, along with a brand new centerfold! To cover set-up costs, etc., the Walkers will need to make back approximately $200.00 from the calendar—beyond that, a percentage of ail the profits goes to ASTRA! The initial press run should be about 5000 copies, so ASTRA should be able earn some good money from the Calendar. When it becomes available, we will offer it to members, of course. (It should be available by Creation Con, if not sooner.")
- Star Trek IV Pushed Back (about the movie and Shatner and Nimoy's salary negotiations)
- Worldcon '86 bid successful
- Emory Trek tentative schedule
- Meeting Report for September (details about topics discussed)
- Oh, for the days when Star Trek was smaller... (a retyped clipping of an article by Jonathan Karp in The Birmingham News, June 7th, 1984)
