Emory Trek was a set of two cons at Emory University in Georgia.

This con evolved and became Dixie Trek.

The "Emory Science Fiction and Fantasy Symposium" and "Emory Trek"

"Emory Trek" and the annual Emory Science Fiction and Fantasy Symposium and are closely entwined, and this can be hard to sort out.

About

Come with me back to 1980 in Atlanta, GA, where a group of Star Trek fans formed The Atlanta Star Trek Society and put on Emory Trek, their first convention, on the campus of Emory University. Two years later yours truly was vice-president of the group, and we were looking to expand the show. Dixie Trek was chosen as its new name. [1]

Conflicts Regarding Access, Direction, and Growth

From a 1981 open letter by Randall Landers:

Last May [1980], the Atlanta Star Trek Society (ASTS) held a small convention on Emory's campus. Advertised as "Emory-Trek", the event was free to Emory students and open to the public for a price. The University Center Board (UCB)'s Special Events committee sponsored the convention, and it was given notice by the Atlanta Journal/Constitution's entertainment section. The convention was decidedly a success as a fair portion of the student body at tended the event, including myself. While there, I entered a trivia contest and won a free membership with the ASTS.[2]

1980

The first Emory Trek was held May 1980.

This con generated another attempt, planned for 1981. The conflict surrounding this planned con was the subject of Open Letter by Landers Regarding Emory Trek.

1984

This was the second Emory Trek.

proposed schedule, printed in ASTRAN #28

ASTRA to host Emory Trek '84, November 10th

On Saturday, November 10th, 1984, ASTRA will host it’s second annual 'Emory Trek, a one-day Star Trek mini-con from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. It will be held at Emory University’s White Hall(home of the annual Symposium) and is co-sponsored by Psi Phi, the Emory University Science Fiction club. We will have three main rooms—one dedicated to running Star Trek Video all day, one dedicated to ASTRA slide shows, our trivia quiz and other special role gaming, and one dedicated to programs put on by other area groups. We are inviting ail the other Star Trek and science fiction groups to come and put on programming, in the spirit of true cooperation. In addition, the Georgia Gaming Society will be hosting a Starfleet Battles tournament and a Star Trek—The Role Playing Game demo. Also, Star Trek II—The Wrath of Khan will be run that evening, at 7, 9 and 11. We need the help of all members to make this convention work: volunteer to help for in hour or two the day of the con. Costs: Free to Emory students and those working on the con, $1.00 for dues-paid ASTRA members, and $3.00 for the general public. If you want to volunteer for the con, or have ideas for it, call the DataLine: leave your name, phone number and the times you would be willing to work. [3]
