1D Back For You Collab is a small, big bang-style challenge in the One Direction fandom designed to encourage writers to finish works in progress. Writers were also allowed to write sequels to already-posted fic. It is one of a few 1D challenges that specifically exclude larries or tinhats from participating.

The name of the challenge may be a reference to the 1D song "Back For You" from their second album, Take Me Home. (As a solo artist Louis Tomlinson also had a 2017 single titled "Back to You".)

Inspiration

The mod posted in March 2018 about their inspiration for starting the challenge:

The last couple of years, I’ve participated in the 1d big bang and the 1d collab, but every year, I have one or two fics that I’ve already started that I have to put aside to write a whole new fic for these fun programs.

Readers get a little grumpy when you’ve put a fic on hold for the second time and it’s been over two years since you started writing it.

So I’m proposing a new collab project. The 1d Back For You Collab!! Where writers of works in progress, that have already started posting on AO3 or here on Tumblr, can get the push they need to finish those fics.[1]

Challenge History

The challenge ran for two rounds in 2018-2019.

For Round One, writer and artist signups began April 1, 2018, and works were scheduled to be completed in September-October. Five fics with accompanying art were listed on the schedule.[2] As of 2022, seven works are visible in the AO3 collection, though only four are marked complete. Five are tagged with Niall Horan/Harry Styles.[3]

Between rounds one and two the mod also ran a monthly writing challenge to "Write 500 words a day for seven days" in December 2018-March 2019.

For Round Two, signups began March 3, 2019, and works were scheduled to be completed in October. The rules were expanded to include writers who hadn't started posting their WIPs yet. Five fics with accompanying art were listed on the schedule.[4] As of 2022, only three works are visible in the AO3 collection.[5]

In January 2020, the mod posted to say that there would not be a round three.[6]

No Tinhats Policy

A few weeks after signups for round one opened, someone sent an anonymous ask to clarify the challenge's position on conspiracy theorists. The mod replied:

You’re hearing it right here right now, if anyone who wants to sign up or has already signed up has ever harassed Louis (or any other member of 1d)’s friends or family because of Larry or any other conspiracy DROP OUT or DON’T BOTHER SIGNING UP![7]

The mod followed up with a general announcement that "this collab is not authorizing any conspiracy theorists or Tinhats to be involved."[8] The mod also commented that they had assumed that as a Harry/Niall writer their challenge wouldn't come to the attention of larries and that they regretted the oversight.

A few more anon asks were sent to the blog by larries and one ziam tinhat:

  • "So I'm confused. You don't want Larries taking part, yet you will accept Larry fan fic? We can write about Louis and Harry being a couple as long as we don't believe it? Am I being dumb or....? "[9]
  • "Your criteria is too broad. I'm a 'tinhat' as you say but I've never once said anything to any of the boys or their families. How can you possibly verify that? Also there was 0 indication of who the mod was or your ridiculous principled stand in the original posts. That's why larries were willing to participate."[10]
  • "I get what you're saying about not wanting people who harass any of the boys or their families to participate; I wouldn't want them to either, but what about those of us who are Ziam's but don't interact with the boys online aside from liking their social media posts and don't interact with their family members at all? I get called a tinhat because I believe in Ziam. Am I, and other fans like me, not allowed to participate either, despite never saying a bad word against any of the boys?"[11]
  • "What an awful policy you’ve adopted for this exchange. Was considering signing up, now I won’t. And I’m not even one of the people you’re targeting. For people who supposedly support the boys and their inclusive ideas, to exclude people this way is reprehensible. What happened to “treat people with kindness?” Won’t be reading any fics for this exchange. Sad for your writers to be associated with this type of unwarranted hate."[12]

The mod confirmed that Harry/Louis fic was fine, but people who believed their ship was real were not welcome, even if they weren't actively harassing anyone, because tinhatting was a slippery slope. In response to the last ask, the mod replied,

The policy is awful because I don’t want people who harass the boys or their family to take part in it? ... You want to support the boys? Great! Just don’t say you support them while you harass their friends and family and don’t listen to a word they say on matters about their own lives. I’m mean, you really got the manipulative phrasing in this ask just right, because you’ve made me look like the bad person here.

The mod then followed up with an apology for "all the discourse" and explained,

I don’t care enough to hate anyone, but I want the rest of the participants to feel safe with their creations and who they are working with. I’m sure we’ll be losing some great writers, however, as I learned in school, being a great writer doesn’t make you a good person.[13]
