The 1D Collab is a big bang challenge with a 20,000 wordcount minimum that was created in response to the mods of 1dbigbang refusing to exclude larries from their challenge.
On October 25, 2017, afairfight posted:
Many of us were disappointed in the way that the 1d bi/g ba/ng mods handled tinhat involvement in the fest. As a result, @citricac1d, @wepush, and I have decided to start organizing a fan collaboration event very similar to the b/ig ba/ng (as in between artists and writers). We’re calling it the 1D Collab and it’s a work in progress, but we thought we’d put it out there for the time being.
We do not condone tinhatting, and tinhats will not be allowed to participate. We’re trying to make this space as safe as possible.[1]
The AO3 collection for the challenge was created the same day. Signups opened November 15, 2017. Fans could sign up as writers or artists, or in a supporting role as beta readers, britpickers, or cheerleaders. Completed works were posted in July-August 2018.
A roundup post listed 21 completed story/artwork pairs.[2] As of 2022, 19 works are still in the AO3 collection. The top pairings are Niall Horan/Zayn Malik (6), Niall Horan/Harry Styles (4), Niall Horan/Louis Tomlinson (3), and Liam Payne/Harry Styles (3). No works were tagged with Harry Styles/Louis Tomlinson.[3]
The challenge ran successfully for one round, and mod afairfight wrote an enthusiastic post about their experience running the event[4].
The mods posted a survey to check for interest in a round 2, but ultimately decided against it. In January 2019, they reported that the number of potential participants was too low to sustain another round and noted that fans were migrating away from Tumblr and from 1D fandom in general.[5] (This was shortly after the Tumblr NSFW Content Purge, when some users left the site and people were predicting the site's demise.)
Rules
On the AO3 collection page, the rules are listed as follows:
- No tinhats will be allowed to participate in this challenge. (What?) If it becomes apparent that you are a tinhat after sign-ups, you will be removed from the challenge.
- No pedophilia.
- If you intend to write H/L for the event, please contact the mods ahead of time.
- You can be a writer and an artist, but can’t create art for your own fic.
- If you cannot complete your fic/art before your given posting date, send us an email and we’ll figure something out.
- Please be kind and considerate.[6]
For art, "traditional forms as well as videos, playlists, pic spams, manips, etc." were allowed.[7]
When asked why people needed special permission to write Harry/Louis fics, the mods answered,
One of the reasons we made this event was to be an alternative to similar events that welcome tinhats. The entire mod squad decided that one of the ways to limit tinhat interaction was to try to encourage authors who might want to write H/L to consider another ship. There is also a lot of H/L fic out there already, and we think it’d be nice for our event to shine a light on some other less-popular ships![8]
