'all things' reConsidered is by Fialka.

It was part of a series. The author comments that: "Many of these essays first appeared as discussions on OBSSE, Scullyfic and/or ATXA."

"This essay was originally written as a response to questions generated by 'all things' being chosen 2nd favourite ep of season 7 on the Scullyfic list."

The essay was first posted to The Annotated X-Files Study Guide and is at Fialka's Candybox.

Later, it was reposted:

Sadly, when the old NBCI server went the way of so many really cool, free things on the net, I never could find another free site with enough space to house the whole Study Guide, and it didn't get enough traffic to warrant paying for 250mb on a server somewhere. Not to mention, I no longer have as much time on my hands as I did back then, so like the UFOs...well, it is another UFO. Some of it still appears to be here, if you can wade your way through all the advertising on FortuneCity. I sure won't be insulted if you don't. These essays are from the original site, and appear here unchanged. Unlinked titles got abducted by aliens somewhere along the way. If you find them wandering dazed by the side of the road, could you be so kind as to send them home?

Excerpts

Not a masterpiece, but yes I loved it. I admit there is an ulterior level to my enjoyment, however, that comes from being an 'insider' so to speak, via this community. Because I know that GA grew from the novice actress who basically said 'gosh no' six years ago when asked if she ever gave story suggestions as DD did, to the accomplished actress confident enough to take a chance and show us Scully through her own eyes, I'm prepared to cut her a lot of GoGirl! slack. For the record though, and for different reasons, I also liked HAD, but I thought the best scripted of the three actors' episodes was En Ami. The script for 'all things' highly flawed, but let us all pull out our first fanfics and remember that this was her first attempt to write for television -- a very tight and difficult brief, and very different from straightforward storytelling. I think one of the flaws is that after seven years there was so much she wanted to say about the character that the story feels over-packed for the lack of actual plot and there was no casefile to bring it into line with the general look/feel of the show.

But yes, there was a lot of GA in it. There's a lot of us in all our writing, is there not? And is that not what makes each writer's vision unique, illuminating different facets of the characters? The only question to me is whether her characterisation of Scully suffered because of the personal elements GA wove into the story -- in my opinion, it did not. But then I like my Scully flawed and stumbling from time to time, reaching out in ways that are difficult and unusual for her. It makes her less a saint and more one of us. And if GA was going to throw her own personal agenda onto Scully, may I just take a moment to thank her for Scully's 'Oh, okay' reaction to the women's kiss? Which doesn't seem out of character either <g>.

Apologies for any rantish aspects of the above, none of which is directed at any member of Scullyfic that happened to have a different opinion. I've been a bad girl reading spoilers again and I don't recommend it. I'm still desperately holding on to the idea that the concurrence of RL and XF could work the way it did at the beginning, when the relationship between the novice GA and the experienced DD informed the on-screen relationship between the fledgling Scully and the seasoned Mulder so well. Scully will be missing the hell out of Mulder and so will we, and if they do it right, they could come up with a season that is emotionally very fulfilling without resorting to soapish pyrotechnics and total revision of backstory. Just lock CC and Spotsy in a closet somewhere. And never let them near the media. Please.
