The Avengers are a superhero team created by Stan Lee for Marvel Comics in 1963. This page is for the various comicsverse iterations of the team.

The Avengers team has had various adaptations:

The team also made appearances in The Marvel Super Heroes (1966), Spider-Man (1981 animated series), Fantastic Four: The Animated Series, X-Men: The Animated Series, The Super Hero Squad Show, and Iron Man: Armored Adventures.

Marvel 616 is the main continuity of the Marvel Comics and there are several additional universes and canonical AUs - for example Ultimate Universe and Marvel Adventures: Avengers, that focus on the The Avengers team.

Marvel 616

See Earth-616 for more universe information.

Starting Team (Classic Avengers): Iron Man (Tony Stark), The Wasp (Janet Van Dyne), Giant Man/Ant Man (Hank Pym), Thor (Don Blake/Thor), the Hulk (Bruce Banner). Joined in Issue #4 by Captain America (Steve Rogers).

Secondary Team (New Avengers): Iron Man (Tony Stark), Captain America (Steve Rogers), Spider-Man (Peter Parker), Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew), Wolverine (Logan Howlett), Power Man (Luke Cage). Later joined by the Sentry (Bob Reynolds).

See Young Avengers for their canon and fandom information.

Fandom

Most fanworks that aren't all about the Tony/Steve use some version of the team from The New Avengers (formed 2005), often including Wolverine and Spider-Man.

Characters & Pairings

By far the most popular characters are Steve Rogers and Tony Stark, though Peter Parker and Clint Barton have substantial followings as well. The most popular pairings reflect these biases -- Steve/Tony dominates, and most of the other pairings involve at least one of these four characters.

Tropes & Fanon

  • Fix-it for the Civil War
  • Identity Porn - Iron Man's identity was originally a secret and everyone thought he was Tony Stark's bodyguard
