Buy You A Mockingbird is a Steve/Tony story by jadedoll. It was written for the Cap/Iron Man Big Bang 2011. neomeruru created an illustration for the story and made a cover thumbnail based on the illustration.[1]
Summary: Babyfic! When Tony unexpectedly becomes a parent, his world view drastically changes. And changes. Then it changes again. And then again.

[jadedoll] wrote a charming little story called Buy You A Mockingbird in which the canon female!Tony-from-an-alternate-universe shows up and, with her dying breath, charges Tony with the care of her biological child. Who happens to also be the son of Steve Rogers, naturally -- theirloveissocanon. ANYWAY: in which Tony Stark starts caring for someone other than himself, and babies make everyone fall in love with each other.[1]
What can I say about this fic that hasn’t already been said. This fic is amazing. The strange twist with Natasha Stark and the collapse of her world made the story an instant read in my books and yet the author continued to throw in other unexpected- for me at least- happenings. I adore this story and anyone that doesn’t fear Tony!Feels should read it. It’s a great story of Steve and Tony learning to take care of a child that is theirs but not. So I’m going to tag this as Domestic Avengers and hope no one gets mad okay?[3]
I’ve been in a huge avengers Steve/Tony mood, so I’ve been reading as many fics as I can. And I’ve been finding some really great ones. This story is based in the comics, and references the Civil War. I’ve never read any of the comics, but I know enough to enjoy fics based in them. The plot concept in this story was cool (and a heartbreaking), seeing Tony struggle through taking care of a baby, navigating his broken relationships with the other Avengers from the Civil War fallout, and how Steve fits into everything, all makes for a truly remarkable story.[4]
Type: baby; Tony and Steve marry when Tony’s a girl (and when they’re boys, too); daddy!Tony is the best Tony; OTP finds their way together. [...] When all of the parallel/alternate are being hit by massive amounts of radiation and portals and such are opening, Natasha Stark gives her baby over to Tony to take care of before she dies. Tony takes to fatherhood liked you’d expect. (In other words, he’s awesome.)[5]
I have an affinity for well written kid!fics and Buy You A Mockingbird is probably my all time favorite of them. The plot is plausible and suspenseful, and the issues a small child can bring are handled realistically. Not only is it a good kid!fic, it’s also a good fic.[6]
