Yuri Is The Purest Form Of Love is a phrase used in anime and manga fandom to assert that that a romantic relationship between women (Yuri), are the most wholesome out of any type of relationship, with the implication being that they lack any sexual desire that would otherwise make them unpure. While the phase is mostly used satirically, some take issue with this implication.
History
While the phase has been used within the anime community for some time its orgins are not fully known. One of the earliest uses appeared on May 28th, 2013 in the Dynasty Scans forums, where user Troid used it in response to the question, "Why is yuri so good?".[1] It has been used on various sites that anime fans congregate, such as 4chan and reddit, and was added to Urban Dictionary on September 15, 2021.[2]
In 2024 the phrase was used in the English subtitles of VTuber Legend, which was noted by both English and Japanese viewers.[3]
